Honestly, this is the first movie I've seen in awhile that's not scary, it's not horrifying, it's disturbing and absolutely terrifying. Because everything that happens here is absolutely real. All of it can and does happen. In an extreme world but also in the beginning, that was too real and something that happens in our modern world. Ghosts and mythical monsters are scary but we know when the movie is over, we're safe from it because it isn't real. This movie leaves you wondering, are you safe. As someone majored in sociology some themes I got from this movie are: social acceptance, socialization, determinism and free will, nature vs. narture, criticising academic ethics and social sciences methods. I think as Hereditary is about psychological state and hereditary traits, Midsommar is about society.

I wouldn't go with her if I were him. Only clicked bc she reminded me of trisha paytas 😭. People arguing this is a happy ending reminds me of people who argued Whiplash had a happy ending. The movies are vastly different but the core points of contention in both movies are roughly similar: both protagonists find fulfillment in an abusive, exploitative and manipulative environment, right after finding themselves alone, with little else to live for.

I never had any feeling that the ending was happy. I was always disgusted by the actions of the cult and their complete ignoring of consent. The members do not tell the people they bring in what is going on. Thus, it doesn't matter that the victims were bad. They did not consent to what they were being set up to be. Let us not pretend that the people brought in weren't going to be killed if only they followed the rules. The drink is drugged, violating the bodily integrity of the people who were brought in. The ones who go out into the world know that their end-of-life ritual is not typical and yet they bring people into it and seem shocked ( SHOCKED* at the reaction. I was quite angry that none of the characters upon seeing the suicides turned to their sponsors and said, You knew about this and you didn't tell us.

For him good and evil are relative (they depend of culture, situation, fashion, etc. he wants to be open minded, to view all situation from different angles. Is murder good or bad? He doesn't have an opinion even for that, for him - it depends on the circumstances. Is private property good or bad? It depends. Is slavery good or bad? It depends. Is adultery good or bad? It depends. And so forth. Oh, he is so cute! Where these views will lead him and how it will all end - you will see.
